LAHORE: The Institute for Peace and Secular Studies (IPSS) on Friday organised a candle light vigil at The Mall in commemoration of the 200,000 people who lost their lives in the nuclear attacks on Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 65 years ago. People from all walks of life, including lawyers, doctors, students, young professionals and rights activists participated in the event, held at the Faisal Chowk.

IPSS patron Saeeda Deep led the candle light vigil. Participants lit candles in memory of the Hiroshima victims, and pledged to prevent a similar catastrophe in the future. They also expressed concerns regarding India and Pakistan’s nuclear power posing a threat to peace in the region. The participants demanded that the developed nations de-nuclearise themselves, to set an example in the greater interest of humanity.

They said that the nuclear weapons of today were much more dangerous and fatal than the ones deployed against the Japanese cities on August 6, 1945. Talking to media, Saeeda said the IPSS strongly believed that peace and non-violence were the only solution to the multitude of problems facing Pakistan in recent times.
