PRESS RELEASE – RAKSHA BANDHAN

The Institute for Peace and Secular Studies (IPSS), in collaboration with the Hindu Sudhar Sabha (HSS), celebrated Raksha Bandhan on Wednesday, 17th August, 2016 at Ambassador Hotel, Lahore.

Mr. Tahir Khalil Sindhu, Minister of Human Rights and Minority Affairs Department Punjab, attended the event as Chief Guest along with individuals belonging to Lahore’s various minority communities. The event commenced with Mr. Sindhu highlighting the initiatives taken by the Punjab Government for the minorities, followed by a short speech about the plight of minorities that ended with a pledge of protection by Saeeda Diep, the Executive Director of IPSS. The initiative aimed to create space for interfaith harmony as well as offered another step towards the integration of minorities into the mainstream narrative, as the IPSS earlier protested against renowned Sindhi Muslim cleric Mian Mithoo, the known perpetrator behind the forced conversion of Hindu girls and the undue displacement of Hindus from their communities.

Raksha Bandhan is a subcontinental festival depicting love, protection and joy that, with time, morphed into a predominantly Hindu festival and has now become increasingly multicultural and secular over the years. Traditionally, women tie a Rakhi around the wrists of their brothers or brother-like relatives or friends. They then pray for the well being of their brother, while the brother promises them protection in return and also gives them gifts. The ceremony witnessed at the Ambassador Hotel was no different; the guests tied Rakhis, prayed for each other, chatted and danced at the festive songs blaring in the background.

Saeeda Diep, Executive Director of the IPSS said, “It is important for such events to be held in these troubled times. The minorities of Pakistan have seen too much persecution and regrettably, still continue to do so. It is to honor their resilience and join in their joy that we have arranged this event.”
