Social and Intellectual Impairment in Children and Adolescents
Time: February 2, 2011, 17:30 – 19:00
Location: Institute for Peace and Secular Studies
Introduction
Intellectual and social development are critical to well-being of a child and adolescent. Often there is deviation in either of the two pathways, which may have genetic or environmental causes. As parents, teachers, and responsible citizens of the society, we should know which children and adolescents may be intellectually challenged and how can we give them social in…dependence despite their handicap.
At IPSS, we will have an interactive discussion related to intellectual and social disabilities in children. The core topics which will be discussed will include different syndromes which may cause intellectual disability, learning difficulties, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism and other disorders of social malfunction among children and adolescents.
The discussion will be facilitated by Ali Jawaid, MD. Ali is a graduate of Aga Khan University, Karachi and further completed clinical and research training in Neuropsychiatry from Baylor College of Medicine, Texas. Currently, he is enrolled in a PhD program in Neuroscience and Molecular Biology. Ali has also written a book-chapter on Williams syndrome- a syndrome characterized by social deficits, which is being published by Oxford publishers.
